The operation of integration is almost - but not quite - the inverse of
differentiation, and this relation between the two operations is obviously of
fundamental importance. This class will be about almost inverses in higher
dimensions, for instance almost-inverses for Laplace’s operator from physics,
even in curved spaces. I shall present a simple and elegant approach to this
topic that is due to Erik van Erp and Robert Yuncken, which uses what I shall
call scalable operators. [For the experts: scalable operators turn out to be the
same thing as classical pseudodifferential operators; in effect, van Erp and
Yuncken created a simple, conceptual and geometric approach to these
operators.] Differential operators are included within the scalable operators,
but so is the operation of integration, along with the other integral operators
that feature in Hilbert’s spectral theory. In this way, this class will be a
natural continuation of the class that I taught in May. However all students
are welcome to join this class, whether or not they attended the May class.
