In this talk, we will show how the notion of coarse embedding, which was introduced by M. Gromov in the 80's, can be used to study actions of discrete groups preserving a rigid geometric structure. We will particularly emphasize the case of isometry groups of Lorentz manifolds, and will prove a Tits alternative for those groups.
