I will report on some recent results on extremal metrics in conformal classes for the spectrum of the laplace-beltrami operator or other differential operators. Extremal metrics are important since they produce minimal surfaces into spheres and encode topology and geometry of the manifold. I will also describe the case of Kahler manifolds.
