In 1982, Simon Donaldson discovered that gauge theory reveals surprising properties of smooth 4-manifolds. The next decades saw dramatic growth in the use of gauge theory in low-dimensional topology, including the original Yang-Mills gauge theories, Seiberg-Witten theory, and Heegaard Floer theory. These lectures will survey the development of the gauge-theoretic tools and their applications to problems in 4-manifold theory.
