A correspondence is made between Hovey's notion of cocategory and the homotopy nilpotence class of certain finite loop spaces. This is used to determine the homotopy nilpotence class of quasi-p-regular exceptional Lie groups and sporadic p-compact groups, despite there being very little known about Samelson products on such spaces.
